Pat Metheny and Carlos Santana play Live Aid
13 July 1985 was dubbed "the day rock'n'roll changed the world" for the £150m raised by the Live Aid famine-relief shows in the UK and the US. No jazz event could come close, but guitarist Pat Metheny proved his reputation outside the jazz loop, by performing alongside Latin-rock star Carlos Santana on the Philadelphia leg of the gigs. A consummate jazz improviser, Metheny's pop feel for catchy hooks and song-like themes had caught a worldwide audience from the mid-70s onwards.
