Oasis battle Blur for the Britpop crown

Country House v Roll With It, much nonsense said and it made the News at 10: this was the battle that showed, if nothing else, the extent of both bands' ambition. Not for either hero status as indie wallflowers. Both Damon Albarn and the Gallaghers wanted to be big. And in the end, Blur won, selling 274,000 copies of their single to Oasis' 216,000, with the songs charting at No 1 and No 2 respectively. Music, some might have said, was the loser.
