ITV1's 56 Up tops Monday 9pm viewing for third week running

ITV1's landmark documentary 56 Up completed a ratings clean sweep on Monday night, winning its 9pm slot for the third week in a row with a little help from ITV1+1 viewers. The final instalment of the three-parter averaged 4.1 million viewers and an 18.6% audience share. BBC1's three-part documentary series Chatsworth also came to a conclusion in the 9pm hour, averaging 3.8 million viewers and a 17.2% share. When ITV1+1 figures are removed, 56 Up was neck and neck with Chatsworth on 3.8 million viewers. 56 Up, which opened with 4.8 million (20.5%) a fortnight ago and averaged 4.4 million (19.5%) last Monday , has held onto its audience pretty well. 9pm competition last night included BBC2 documentary Afghanistan: the Great Game – a Personal View by Rory Stewart (1.1 million/4.9%, including BBC HD), Channel 4's The Secret Millionaire (1.7 million/8%) and Channel 5's Robson's Extreme Fishing Challenge (1.1 million/4.9%). After News at Ten on ITV1 one of the foreign documentaries inspired by the original 7 Up, Born in the USSR: 28 Up, averaged 700,000 viewers and a 6.9% audience share from 10.35pm. Watch that man Just as the UK enjoys the first summery weather of the year, BBC2 launches Springwatch, which returned for a new series with presenter Chris Packham reportedly slipping David Bowie song titles into his commentary, after previously referencing the Smiths and Manic Street Preachers. Springwatch averaged 2.5 million viewers and an 11.3% audience share in the 8pm hour. 8pm competition included BBC1's EastEnders (7.4 million/34.9%) and Panorama: Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate (3.5 million/15.7%); ITV1's The Queen and I (3.4 million/15.9%) and Coronation Street (7.3 million/32.8%); Channel 4's The Real Mr and Mrs Assad (1 million/4.5%) and Gok Cooks Chinese (1.1 million/5.1%); and Channel 5's The Gadget Show: World Tour (700,000/3.4%). Fear and loathing in the Hamptons Revenge, one of the biggest new shows in the just completed US 2011/12 TV season, had a promising UK debut on E4 on Monday night. The drama about rich Hamptons folk, starring Emily VanCamp as a young woman bent on revenge against the family, headed by Madeleine Stowe's glamorous matriarch, she blames for framing her innocent father, drew 748,000 viewers and a 3.4% audience share from 9pm. Revenge was the fourth most-watched free-to-air multichannel show on Monday, behind ITV2's Bond movie repeat Die Another Day (9pm: 886,000/5.1%), E4's Made in Chelsea (10pm: 778,000/4.5%) and BBC3's EastEnders repeat (10pm: 760,000/3.9%). Sky Atlantic's Game of Thrones was the most-watched show of the day on pay-TV channels once again, with the penultimate episode of the second series pulling in 497,000 viewers and a 2.3% share. All ratings are Barb overnight figures, including live, +1 (except for BBC and some other channels including Sky1) and same day timeshifted (recorded) viewing, but excluding on demand, or other – unless otherwise stated.
