Liverpool's teenage winger Raheem Sterling is one of them, the others are Southampton's uncapped Adam Lallana and the Tottenham midfielder Jake Livermore Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian The teams come out to a not quite full Wembley Stadium. Subs: Ruddy, Walker, Bertrand, Cahill, Carrick, Livermore, Lallana, Sturridge, Welbeck, Sterling, Butland Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Ten minutes in Roy Hodgson is off his bench cheering away ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian The reason is the Jermain Defoe has fired the ball into the Ukraine net. Unfortunately for England before he hit the shot the ref blew for a foul Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Aside from Defoe's no-goal, Ukraine had the better of the opening period but England start to penetrate a bit more - here's Leighton Baines controlling the ball whilst going on a marauding run Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian They go close just before the half hour mark when a lively James Milner fires in a shot but it's blocked by Selin Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Five minutes later, England go even closer when Defoe's miscued header comes to an unmarked Tom Cleverley six yards out. With the whole goal at his mercy, the youngster sidefoots the ball onto the shins of Ukraine keeper Pyatov. A bad miss and he and Frank Lampard know it Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian It proves costly as five minutes later Konoplyanka curls a wonderful shot into the England net Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Cleverley then misses another sitter - fluffing a sidefooted shot well wide of the target. However the youngster hasn't let those misses affect his confidence here he is going in against the larger Khacheridi. He also clattered the woodwork in the last minute of the first half. Half time score: England 0-1 Ukraine Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Here's some inspiration for the England players at half-time, it's some of the TeamGB Olympic medallists Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian The second half is an equally tight affair, here's Gerrard and Yarmolenko going up for a high ball Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian It's frustrating too ... The ball slaps against the diving defender's arm. The referee points at the spot. Penalty for England Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Fresh from scoring from the spot on Friday, Frank Lampard places the ball on the spot ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Steps up and smashes the ball past Pyatov Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Just one minute after the equaliser, there's bad news for England when Steven Gerrard lunges at the ball through Denys Garmash ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Seeing the Ukrainian lying on the turf, Gerrard knows what's coming - the referee reaches into his pocket and pulls out a yellow card. As the England captain was booked earlier in the second half, the ref then pulls out a red too. It's Gerrard's first international dismissal. Final score: England 1-1 Ukraine Photograph: Tom Jenkins Lampard's penalty ensured that England still haven't lost a home World Cup qualifier since Germany won the last game at the old Wembley back in October 2000. Though they'll be relieved at that, the fact is they've dropped two points at home against a good but beatable team and were second best for long stretches of the game. Surely that won't be the case in England's next match - San Marino in October - will it? Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian
