Ronan Kerr death: woman, 23, arrested over car bomb murder of police officer

A 23-year-old woman has been arrested in Omagh in connection with the murder of the young Catholic police constable Ronan Kerr in the town this spring. The suspect was arrested in the County Tyrone town on Wednesday and is now being questioned at the serious crime suite in Antrim police station. A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that searches were being carried out in the Omagh area. The woman's detention brings to six the number of people the PSNI are questioning in relation to the killing of Kerr on 2 April. Five men, aged 22, 27, 33, 37 and 46, were arrested on Tuesday and remain in custody following a big investigation by the service. About 200 officers and other staff have carried out a series of raids across Down, Derry and Antrim, as part of investigations into the killing. Seven properties, including a family-owned pub, were searched in areas including Coalisland, Toome, Bellaghy, and Ballyronan. The men were detained under the Terrorism Act. Constable Kerr, 25, died in a booby-trap blast outside his home in the Highfield estate, Omagh, after a bomb was attached to his car. He was the second member of the PSNI in the past two years reportedly to die at the hands of dissident republicans.
