Road shut after woman's body found in Northumberland

Police have launched an investigation after a woman's body was found in Northumberland. A section of the A196 near the town of Morpeth has been closed by police following the discovery of the body at 5.25pm on Thursday. A police spokeswoman said: "An investigation is under way and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death." She said a section of the road between Dunces Houses and Shadfen – about a mile east of Morpeth – has been closed to traffic to allow the scene to be examined. "That is all the information we have at this time," she added. • This article was amended on 1 July 2011. The original said Morpeth is in Northumbria. This has been corrected.
