Portsmouth and Coventry City are relegated from the Championship
Portsmouth and Coventry City have been relegated to League One after Bristol City beat Barnsley 2-0 at Ashton Gate to preserve their Championship status. Portsmouth were beaten 2-1 by Derby County at Fratton Park, and Coventry lost 2-0 against already relegated Doncaster Rovers at the Ricoh Arena, but the results were irrelevant: Cole Skuse and Jon Stead scored for the Robins to end the two teams' stay in the Championship. For Portsmouth, relegation is the latest chapter in a turbulent recent history and in a season in which the club has endured administration and a 10-point penalty. While it has been 29 years since the south coast club were in the third tier, Coventry, another club with off-field issues, were last in the old Third Division in 1964. Bristol City, heavily reliant on loan players, extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a comfortable win against Barnsley.
