Primeval savaged by Pointless Celebrities

There were no monster ratings for the return of ITV1's Primeval, which with fewer than 3 million viewers lost out to BBC1's Pointless Celebrities on Saturday. Primeval began its fifth series with 2.93 million viewers, a 16.1% share, between 6pm and 7pm on Saturday. BBC1 quiz Pointless Celebrities had 3.47 million viewers (19.2%) between 6pm and 6.50pm. It was still ITV1's biggest rating show of the day as peaktime viewing was dominated by BBC1's coverage of the Czech Republic's 1-0 win over Poland which secured their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2012. Match of the Day Live: Euro 2012 averaged 5.72 million viewers, a 26.4% share, between 7.10pm and 10pm with a five-minute peak of 7.07 million. Live coverage of the match itself, which kicked off at 7.45pm, averaged 6.4 million with a 15-minute peak of 7 million (31.7%) between 8.15pm and 8.30pm. It predictably had the better of an ITV1 Poirot repeat which could only manage 2.21 million viewers (10%) between 8pm and 10pm. With the two final games in Group A kicking off at the same time, football fans could also watch Russia's shock 1-0 defeat by Greece on BBC3 . Match of the Day Live: Euro 2012 had 864,000 viewers, a 3.9% share, between 7.30pm and 10pm on BBC3, with a five-minute peak of 1.95 million. Never knowingly overexposed There has been no shortage of royal pomp and ceremony on BBC1 of late – some of it not involving Fearne Cotton – and her majesty returned to the small screen with Trooping the Colour: the Queen's Birthday Parade. BBC1's live coverage had 3.34 million viewers, a 17.5% share, between 10.30am and 1pm, with the highlights on BBC2 watched by 2.56 million viewers (12.9%) between 6.30pm and 8pm. Owzat? Channel 5's international one-day cricket, highlights of England's opening 50-over win against the West Indies , had 677,000 viewers, a 3.3% share, between 7pm and 8pm. Sky Sports 1's day-long coverage of the match averaged 399,000 viewers between 10.30am and 7pm, a 3.5% share, with a peak of 633,000. All ratings are Barb overnight figures, including live, +1 (except for BBC and some other channels including Sky1) and same day timeshifted (recorded) viewing, but excluding on demand, or other – unless otherwise stated. Figures for BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 generally include ratings for their HD simulcast services, unless otherwise stated • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email [email protected] or phone 020 3353 3857.
