New music: Grimes – Genesis

As is customary for new year, people make resolutions. Quit smoking, exercise more, stop listening to Olly Murs, that kind of thing. For Montreal's Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, it seems to be "release potentially amazing album via a record label with a great history for releasing amazing albums". This week Boucher announced she had signed to 4AD: "Just want 2 say i am so honoured to be releasing my next album with 4AD – a record label I have admired since I was 13 and first heard the cocteau twins and realized girls can make music, and goth is sick." That album will be called Visions, due on 12 March. She's also giving away the excellent track Genesis. Like most Grimes songs it's difficult to pinpoint at first, all bubbling beats, swooning synths and distant backing vocals. Bear with it, however, and it becomes a thing of beauty.
