Championship Verdict: The Observer fans' network on Saturday's matches

Burnley 1-1 Hull Was it a good match? It wasn't a football spectacular, although our opening goal, from Adam Hammill, was spectacular – a shot from around 30 yards that went in off the crossbar. But we didn't take advantage of it, and Kevin Kilbane got them back into the match. We could still have won it in the last 10 minutes, when we had a strong penalty appeal turned down, hit the bar and saw their keeper make a fine save. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Hammill was our star player. He is beginning to make a name for himself and we are going to struggle to hold on to him during the January transfer window. Adam Brammer, Observer reader Cardiff 3-1 Norwich Was it a good match? Watching from the stands, you felt this game could go upside down for us. We took an early two-goal lead, but all the time Norwich kept coming back. In the second half, they couldn't keep up the same level of pressure and we looked a lot more comfortable. This was one on the most open games I have seen. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Kevin McNaughton did great at right-back, winning plenty of tackles and turned his attacker on several occasions. It was great to see Craig Bellamy start his first game at home. Michael Morris, CardiffCity-Mad.co.uk Crystal Palace 0-3 Swansea Was it a good match? We couldn't have got off to a worse start with Scott Sinclair scoring after six minutes due to some terrible defending. James Vaughan played as well as he could up front but the midfield was really lacking. The last few weeks we've had a lot of injuries so we can't put too much blame on George Burley but the signings he made really haven't gelled. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Vaughan was one of the better players but Andy Gorman had too many wayward passes – he's not up the level of the Championship. Peter Guntrip, Holmesdale.net Derby 4-1 Watford Was it a good match? We dominated the first half and took a deserved lead through a fine finish by John Brayford. Watford were poor before the break and couldn't cope with our intricate passing. A fortunate goal gave us a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time. They upped their game in the second half and made it 2-1 early on but an excellent finish from Shefki Kuqi and a wonder goal by Tomas Cywka wrapped up the game for us. Who played well/who had a nightmare? It was a fine, all-round team performance but the standout performances came from Kuqi, Brayford and Shaun Barker. George Glover, Observer reader Ipswich 2-0 Millwall Was it a good match? This was an entertaining game. Millwall will feel aggrieved that they didn't get on the score sheet. It was a comfortable victory in the end but we could have scored more - Jake Livermore missed an open goal in added time and Jason Scotland missed an easy chance in the second half. We've been inconsistent of late but the performance was encouraging and hopefully we can move on. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Tamas Priskin played well and Grant Leadbitter, who scored today, played confidently throughout – he's been one of our better players this season. Claire Watkins, TractorBoys.com Leicester 1-0 Preston Was it a good match? This was an important win and the three points gained are everything. But it was a very poor game between teams with the worst defences in the division and, on the evidence of this, probably the worst attacks. Leicester had a massive amount of possession but they rarely troubled the Preston keeper. The visitors had chances in the first 15 seconds and last 15 seconds but nothing else. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Kyle Naughton was excellent while Miguel Vítor was steadiness personified. Chris Weale may have kept a clean sheet but had something of a stinker. Eddie Blount, Observer reader Middlesbrough 1-2 Bristol City Was it a good match? We weren't as hesitant as we have been and there was definitely more confidence in the team. But we underestimated the opposition in the first half and the quality of our passing went downhill as the match went on. We need to work on the basics. The substitutions were made too late. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Kris Boyd scored a good goal but missed a few chances, and there was plenty of effort from Matthew Bates. But there wasn't anyone in particular who really stood out and I would have struggled to pick a man of the match. It was good to see Luke Williams back from injury. Elle Brunton, Observer reader Portsmouth 2-1 Notts Forest Was it a good match? We played well in the second half today. But in the first half we were very poor – we kept giving the ball away. Liam Lawrence scored a well-worked goal and his corner set up Ibrahima Sonko for his. There was a great atmosphere – the fans really got behind the team. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Lawrence was probably our best player – his crossing and shooting were good and he was always a threat for us going forward. Jamie Ashdown pulled off some great saves and although they scored, he wasn't at fault for the goal. Vic Oliver, Observer reader QPR 1-1 Burnley Was it a good match? It was a very even game. We played well in spells but it wasn't consistent enough. We had chances in the second half to score but we weren't clinical enough in front of goal. Burnley looked a good team but they lacked ambition. They went into their shells in the second half but if they'd been more attacking, they would have caused us more problems. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Jamie Mackie put in a good effort and Shaun Derry was hard-tackling in midfield, helping to set up some chances. Overall, it was a good team effort and with a bit more luck, we would have won. Adam Boxer, QPR.VitalFootball.co.uk Reading 4-3 Doncaster Was it a good match? When we went 3-1 down it didn't look good for us. But there were some inspired substitutions by our manager and when we got to 3-2 down the crowd got behind the team and it lifted the players. Soon after, Doncaster took off John Oster. That was a strange thing to do because I thought he was running the game at the time. A draw would have been a result, so to get all three points was a boost, especially with us playing QPR and Cardiff next. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Jem Karacan was our best player, the catalyst for the second goal. Both defences were pretty terrible. Nick Deaves, Observer reader Scunthorpe 1-4 Leeds Was it a good match? It was incredibly frustrating. We matched Leeds for considerable parts of the game, but poor defending and wasteful attacking cost us. They weren't better than us for the first hour but after that, when we were having to chase the game, we were picked off. Leeds played some nice football at times, and Jonathan Howson was impressive. It's been a weird season – last year our home form kept us up and our away form was poor. Now it's the reverse. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Michael O'Connor played well for us, his deliveries and crosses were good throughout. Michael Raynes had a nightmare and gifted them their second. Max Bell, Scunthorpe.VitalFootball.co.uk Sheffield United 0-1 Coventry Was it a good match? It was a strange one because we definitely deserved a lot more from the game. We hit the woodwork three times, and in the run-up to their goal the referee didn't see that Stephen Quinn had been fouled. It was incredibly frustrating as we'd had all the chances. Luck wasn't on our side. Coventry were a strong, typical Adi Boothroyd side. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Kyle Bartley, on loan from Arsenal, looked really good on the ball. The most notable nightmare was the referee, and I don't normally say that. He missed a blatant foul and we suffered for it. Richard Batho, TheBladesOnline.com
