Wines of the week: David Williams

Flor de Nelas Seleção, Dão, Portugal 2009 (£7.99, Sainsbury's) The Douro Valley, home of port and some extremely smart reds, generally attracts most of the attention given to Portuguese wine, but the region to the south, the Dão, can be just as exciting. This is a delightfully aromatic red, with violets and red berries, a succulent plummy flavour, the merest hint of sandpaper tannin and a lively acidity that makes it work wonders with duck. Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (£9.99 or £7.99 if you buy two bottles, Majestic) Almost every shop you go into seems to have an offer on New Zealand sauvignon blanc at the moment, but few examples offer the exuberance of this vivacious, racy white. The classic Kiwi flavours of gooseberry, elderflower cordial and a just a hint of pungent herbaceousness are all present and correct, but there's an invigorating snap and freshness here, too. Guerrieri Rizzardi, Bardolino Classico Tacchetto, Italy 2009 (£14.50, Fortnum & Mason) Generally speaking, wines from the Bardolino region of northeast Italy are nothing to write home about – unless meanness and acidity move you to put pen to paper, that is. But this elegant red is something else entirely. There's an ethereal feel to the soft strawberry fruit and the silky, slinky tannins, making this a wine of effortless charm and beguiling fleetness of foot.
