Napoli v Chelsea - in pictures

With Manchester United and Manchester City having dropped into the Europa League and Arsenal having effectively been knocked out of the Champions League by a 4-0 first-leg hammering by Milan, Chelsea are the last English team with ambitions of lifting the European Cup this season. Strange then that André Villas-Boas has left Ashley Cole out of his starting line-up for Tuesday's match against Napoli and preferred José Bosingwa in his place Photograph: Ciro Fusco/EPA But Cole doesn't have to wait long to join the action as Bosingwa pulls his hamstring in the 11th minute and is forced to limp off. Cole looks a bit rusty, to say the least Photograph: Alberto Pizzoli/AFP/Getty Images It's a rough and tumble contest, as Hugo Campagnaro can attest after a clash with Didier Drogba which leaves him with a gaping head-wound. Campagnaro decides to play on and is soon throwing himself at the feet of Branislav Ivanovic Photograph: CIRO FUSCO/EPA Chelsea's midfielder Juan Mata gives his side the lead in the 27th minute when Cannavaro spoons a bouncing ball into his path. Mata side-foots a calm volley beyond the keeper to score a precious away goal Photograph: Alberto Pizzoli/AFP/Getty Images But Ezequiel Lavezzi draws Napoli level when he curls a shot around the outstretched boot of the defender Gary Cahill and the dive of the keeper Petr Cech Photograph: Mike Hewitt/Getty Images With the half-time whistle seconds away, Napoli's Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani arrives at the back post to meet a sweeping cross ... Photograph: Cesare Abbate/EPA The ball flies fortuitously off his shoulder and beyond Cech, giving Napoli a 2-1 half-time lead Photograph: Cesare Abbate/EPA Anyone would think he intended it, judging from his celebration Photograph: Andreas Solaro/AFP/Getty Images Chelsea start the second half well, but they find themselves exposed in the 65th minute when David Luiz fails to clear a through-ball from Campagnaro. The ball is ultimately spread across the penalty area to Lavezzi who slots it into the net with Cech helpless Photograph: Giampiero Sposito/Reuters David Luiz has a chance to score at the other end, but can't convert, before the substitute Frank Lampard has a testing long-range shot saved in injury-time Photograph: John Sibley/Action Images It ends 3-1 and Lampard really doesn't look too happy Photograph: Alberto Pizzoli/AFP/Getty Images The Chelsea players may feel dejected now but Napoli looked sufficiently shaky in defence in this first leg to suggest that all is not yet lost.
