The rationale for the merger was to create a single organisation capable of delivering a much needed reconfiguration of acute services, bringing Leeds into line with other major cities. The Trust is the largest in the UK and boasts a national and international reputation in many specialist areas. The trust has 15,000 staff - including 5,500 qualified and unqualified nurses and more than 600 consultants who care for over a million patients each year. The annual budget of the trust is in excess of £730m. The trust operates its services from eight sites, providing secondary hospital care for Leeds' 720,000 plus residents. In addition, it provides specialist tertiary services for a population of 2.6m across Yorkshire. For some very specialist services, such as liver transplantation, it is recognised as a national centre of excellence. The eight trust sites are: St James's University Hospital; Leeds General Infirmary; Wharfedale General Hospital; Chapel Allerton Hospital; Seacroft Hospital; Cookridge Hospital; Leeds Chest Clinic; and Leeds Dental Institute.
