Sigur Rós to release new album
Sigur Rós have ended to their three-year hiatus with plans to release a new album in the spring. The "floaty and minimal" LP, their sixth, was recorded at the band's swimming pool turned studio outside Reykjavik. The Icelandic group are currently promoting Inni, a live album and concert film, recorded in London in 2008 . But the new album has been kept secret, quietly developing over the last few years. In the interim, three band members had children and singer Jónsi Birgisson recorded a solo album , an instrumental record , and a forthcoming film soundtrack . After touring solo, Birgisson told the Wall Street Journal , "it was like coming home to see the guys again. It felt natural." As reported in January 2010, Sigur Rós scrapped initial work on the follow-up to með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust . "We were recycling," Birgisson explained this week. But the band gradually found their stride, completing something they call "introverted", "ambient" and "a slow takeoff toward something". But perhaps their new sound isn't that different to the scrapped sessions, described in 2009 as "slower and more ambient". But then, when has a Sigur Rós album not had moments of "floaty minimalism"?
