Images of modern feminism
As images of modern feminism go, they are a varied bunch, perhaps not least because a number of the contributing artists are men. The collection of 38 postcards was created by both artists and those famed in different fields, among them singer Kate Nash, actors Jo Brand and Jessica Stevenson, and psychotherapist and author Susie Orbach. The original artworks will be auctioned at the Aubin gallery on Monday to raise funds for a Feminism in London conference this month. Nash contributes a photo-collage satirising the commercialisation and sexualisation of the music industry, including the phrase "Download my new single and I'll suck your cock for 79p." Gerald Laing, the veteran of British pop art, came up with a more cryptic but perhaps equally caustic montage showing a beehived Amy Winehouse wielding a vacuum cleaner and bin bag, while other contributors were more direct. Julian Opie, famed for pared-down, computer-generated portraits, created a figure, above, with a fist raised in a gesture which might be interpreted as either power or defiance. David Rusbatch created a triptych of female images: "pre-feminism", a Frida Kahlo self-portrait; "feminism", Germaine Greer; and "post-feminism", a pornographic image. Sarah Maple, the artist who put together the collection, said the brief she gave was solely to create a work about feminism. "We've got an amazing variety of responses. The plan was to have a range, men and women, and of all ages, from students to someone like Gerald Laing, who's in his 70s," she said.
