News of the World saw modest month-on-month boost in final weeks

The News of the World marked its last full month of circulation figures in June with a modest increase on May of just over 10,000 copies, but its year-on-year decline continued. News International's now-defunct 168-year-old Sunday redtop, which closed in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal after its final 11 July edition, had an average weekly circulation of 2,667,428 in June, up 0.38% on the previous month but down 5.7% year on year, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations figures published on Friday. The Mail on Sunday was the only Sunday title to add readers both month on month (0.47%) and year on year (0.98%), up by 10,196 copies compared with May to 1,927,791. In June the Sunday Mirror was also up on the previous month, albeit marginally, rising 0.08% to 1,087,796, but was down 5.24% on the same month in 2010. The Daily Star Sunday was flat month on month but suffered the biggest yearly fall of any Sunday title, down 13.12% to 305,978. The Sunday Mirror's Trinity Mirror stablemate, the People, averaged 474,549, down 1.39% on the previous month and 8.61% year on year. News International is expected to launch a Sunday edition of the Sun to replace the NoW, possibly as early as August, with former NoW deputy editor Victoria Newton heavily tipped to be editor. All the mid-market and redtop Sundays are increasing their print runs and putting extra money into marketing – and in some cases price cutting – to try to scoop up the News of the World's former readers. Daily Mail & General Trust is also understood to be planning a new redtop sister title to the Mail on Sunday, while the Daily Star Sunday is launching a new magazine, Ok! Extra . Among the quality Sundays, the biggest monthly drop was recorded by the Sunday Times, which came within a whisker of slipping below the 1 million mark. Its sales were down 4.64% on the previous month to 1,000,848, a year-on-year fall of 7.82%. Of the qualities only the Independent on Sunday was up on the previous month – albeit by an average of 17 copies – rising 0.01% to 151,229, down 3.76% year on year. Sales of the popular Sunday titles edged up 0.06% on the previous month but were down 6.48% year on year to 4,896,226. Combined sales of the quality titles fell 3.15% on the month and 8.22% year on year to 1,996,013. The mid-market titles were also down, albeit not as steeply, to 2,769,689, down 0.61% on the previous month and 1.11% year on year. Overall sales of all the Sunday papers was 9,661,928, down from 10,211,211 in June 2010.
