Euro 2012: Roy Hodgson's England record against Italy – P1 L0

Flashback October 1997 England have got their Euro 2012 quarter-final against Italy in the bag: Roy Hodgson has been part of a successful campaign against Italy before. In 1997 England travelled to Rome needing a point to secure automatic qualification for the 1998 World Cup, and Hodgson – following a spell as manager of Internazionale – joined the party as Glenn Hoddle's interpreter. England duly secured a 0-0 draw , the first time in 15 attempts another country had taken a point in Rome. "This result means an awful lot for English football," said Hodgson at the time. "If we are capable of coming to a place like this and in a game of this nature, and getting the desired result when all the pressures are on you, and everything is conspiring against you, then it shows that you are capable of doing it when it comes to the finals next summer." It turned out that England were capable of getting knocked out by Argentina on penalties at France 98. England's last victory over Italy came in a friendly tournament in 1997. Ian Wright and Paul Scholes scored the goals in a 2-0 victory .
