The best expensive Easter eggs - in pictures
WINNER! Chocolate Easter eggs over £20 category Demarquette Easter egg clam Average mark: 4.5/5 £25, 300g (£8.33/100g) "What's a chocolate clam got to do with Easter?" mused one of our tasters before hastily adding "but I'm not complaining." Recording the highest average mark of any of the Easter chocolate products we tried, the thick shell "tastes as good as it looks" and contains "good sized, delicious caramel-filled chocolate eggs with a marbled pattern on the outside." Overall "a stonking product" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 2nd place, Easter eggs over £20 category paul.a.young sea salted caramel egg Average mark: 3.75/5 £19.95, 90g (£22.17/100g) OK, so this is in the over £20 category even though it costs 5p under the threshold, but it definitely belongs here. "Clever, tasty, teensy for the price (think two Cadbury's Creme Eggs) - and totally impractical" this egg comes with its own eggcup and china spoon and wowed our tasters. Inside the surprisingly tough shell there's "creamy, salty, buttery caramel" which is "is close to perfect, and if you can just ignore the price it's a total joy" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 3rd place, Easter eggs over £20 category Hotel Chocolat's The Eggsibitionist extra thick Easter egg Average mark: 3/5 £26, 390g (£6.67/100g) With its "proper thick milk chocolate and a good assortment inside" one taster felt this was "all that you would want an egg at the luxury end of the market to be." Opinion on the contents was divided, however, with another reporting "my small 'inner egg' was utterly foul" and a third finding "the raspberry one, in particular, is an acquired taste to put it mildly" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 4th place, Easter eggs over £20 category Betty's Swiss dark chocolate Easter egg Average mark: 2.5/5 £39, 600g (£6.50/100g) This really is "a stupidly big egg" which "looks fabulous in an utterly Betty's of Harrogate sort of way" and is, if you're into this sort of thing, "every child's Willy Wonka inspired chocolate dream." The chocolate let it down, though, by just being "OK" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 5th= place, Easter eggs over £20 category Artisan du Chocolat butterfly egg Average mark: 2/5 £29.99, 400g (£7.50/100g) "Really looks the business ... until you put it in your mouth. Strangely flavour-free" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 5th= place, Easter eggs over £20 category Rococo hand painted dark chocolate egg Average mark: 2/5 £25, 160g (£6.41/100g) "The shell, which is made from different types of chocolate, is trying to do too much and as a result, not achieving very much at all. Overpriced and underwhelming" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 7th place, Easter eggs over £20 category Harrods milk couverture Easter laced egg with rabbit Average mark: 1.75/5 £29.95, 290g (£10.33/100g) "Much like the Harrods Food Hall in which it is sold: very pretty to look at, but the underlying product simply isn't very good. The lattice-work shell will make a terrible mess of your carpet" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian 8th place, Easter eggs over £20 category Prestat rose and violet creme egg Average mark: 1.5/5 £22.50, 227g (£9.91/100g) "Chocolatiers to royalty really ought to know better than to come up with something that tastes of vaguely chocolate-flavoured pot pourri. Nasty" Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian
