85. Gavin Millar
Job: deputy head, Doughty Street Chambers Age: 53 Industry: law New entry A founding member of the leading human rights practice Doughty Street Chambers, Gavin Millar QC successfully fought for the landmark high court ruling that said that broadcasters did not have to hand over Dale Farm footage to the government. A specialist in media law, Millar's cases tend to involve freedom of speech and he has represented all the big media organisations. He won another landmark case in the court of appeal for the Guardian, which established that journalists may see documents referred to in criminal proceedings, and defended the Sunday Mirror in privacy proceedings brought by Rio Ferdinand . Millar's clients are as varied as Glenn Mulcaire, Jon Gaunt and the Telegraph Media Group (at the Leveson inquiry). He also represented the crown in connection with media coverage of criminal proceedings against John Venables in 2010. Co-author of Media Law and Human Rights and on the board of the Centre for Investigative Journalism at City University, he is described as "absolutely unflappable … frighteningly bright" and "a good choice for hard-hitting cases, or anything with serious political connotations". He took silk in 2000 and was appointed a recorder of the crown court in 2003.
