Kyla La Grange: Ashes – review

The mid-level hype building around Kyla La Grange is a mixed blessing, but her debut suggests she's confident enough to shoulder it. It has escaped precisely no one that her melodramatic goth pop has plenty in common with Florence Welch, particularly on the tribal I Could Be or Been Better , while her occasionally fluting vocals invite comparison with Kate Bush or Tori Amos . But she might just as well be Coldplay's highly strung kid sister; tracks such as Catalyst plot a steady but deeply satisfying course towards stadium-sized climaxes - epic bluster replaced with genuine bite.
