Silvestre de Sousa all the rage for jockeys' title after winning day

Silvestre de Sousa made a dramatic charge towards the top of the jockeys' leaderboard with five winnerson Tuesday, taking him past Ryan Moore and into a close second place behind Paul Hanagan. The Brazilian, who recently said he has no designs on the champion jockeys' crown this year, rode a hat-trick at Beverley and moved on to Southwell's evening meeting, where he won the first two races. That put him on 70 winners for the season, four behind Hanagan, the reigning champion, and one ahead of Moore, who rode a winner at Yarmouth last night. Ladbrokes cut De Sousa's chances of a first title from 5-1 to 3s after his performance at Beverley and even the shorter price may come under pressure as punters respond to the jockey's run of form. Pour Moi, the dramatic winner of last month's Derby, will not run until September. His trainer, André Fabre, confirmed on Tuesday that the target is the Prix Niel at Longchamp, a trial for the following month's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. "He is fine and is still semi-resting at the moment," Fabre said. "He could do something more next week. I think he will improve. All horses improve with time. The Epsom form looks good but in the Arc, of course, he will be in competition with the older horses and I also have a lot of respect for the Japanese horses coming." Fabre will have two runners, Meandre and Kreem, in Thursday's Grand Prix de Paris, also at Longchamp, but they are fifth and sixth in the betting for a race in which just seven horses remain. Aidan O'Brien has a much stronger hand, fielding the first two horses from last month's Irish Derby, Treasure Beach and Seville, who were both behind Pour Moi at Epsom.
