Glamorgan's promotion hopes dampened by the Surrey weather

The weather is messing with Glamorgan's promotion challenge. Only 45 overs were possible on the second day of their match against Surrey, and Glamorgan will do well to manufacture a winning position from here. They closed on 72 for two, a deficit of 308. Grim clouds camped over the ground throughout the day. After bad light delayed the start by 90 minutes, Surrey resumed on 340 for six. Chris Schofield and Gareth Batty, two former England spinners whose Test careers were more notable for what they did with the bat, extended their seventh-wicket partnership to 77 before Batty whipped across the line at Jim Allenby and was bowled for 34. Surrey's lower order showed a surprising lack of urgency, and the game was going nowhere until James Harris struck in consecutive overs after lunch: Chris Tremlett was caught behind fiddling at a good delivery that left him, and Schofield was yorked emphatically for 63. When Stuart Meaker snicked a Allenby delivery soon after, Surrey were all out for 380. Tremlett, who looks an increasingly decent bet for England's Ashes squad, then produced a good opening spell that included the wicket of Gareth Rees, trapped leg-before on the back foot for four. The prolific Australian opener Mark Cosgrove smacked five boundaries in a rapid 26, two of them with vicious cut strokes, before playing on to Meaker. The captain Jamie Dalrymple and Ben Wright added 34 confident runs before bad light forced the players off at 4.15pm. Soon after came the rain, and with it went any hope of further play. Glamorgan, who could be promoted if they win this match will be pulling back the curtains nervously tomorrow morning.
