Jake White checks in at London Irish and ponders his options with RFU

Jake White, South Africa's World Cup-winning coach in 2007, is considering applying to become the Rugby Football Union's new performance director and is spending this week with London Irish as a consultant. White will do an assessment for the club who on Sunday ended a 10-match losing streak by defeating the Ospreys, and will also travel with Irish for their Heineken Cup match at Munster on Sunday. The South African said that he had not yet applied for the performance director position created this month by the RFU. "I am interested but I am waiting for a detailed job description and to find out how much responsibility the director will have." White, who has done consultancy work since leaving the Springboks at the end of 2007, arrived in Reading this morning at the invitation of the London Irish head coach, Toby Booth. "After a surprisingly bad run, Toby and the chief executive, Andy Martin, approached me and asked if I could help," White said. "I will spend a week with them and will be able to provide an outside and objective viewpoint. "It also provides me with an opportunity to see the inner workings of the club, and having being involved in similar stints with Saracens, Toulon and Suntory [in Tokyo] before, that should be interesting to compare."
