Six-year-old George wanted BBC to budge on the Budget

When the BBC's new director general George Entwistle was six years old, he wrote to the then DG – Charles Curran, since you ask – about a very important matter. Tom and Jerry had been bumped off the schedule by chancellor of the exchequer Roy Jenkins' Budget, leaving one of young George's brothers in tears. This week's Radio Times reports that the considerate Entwistle wrote: "Dear sir, please will you put on programmes that are not very long because my other brothers, well one brother, is in tears," wrote little Ent. "He wanted to see Tom and Jerry and had to watch the budget. Yours sincerely, George Entwistle." Alas the letter was never sent, and was returned to George by his father just before he landed the top job himself. "I had misspelt it 'derector'," Entwistle said in an interview in the Radio Times. "My father, underneath, had written Broadcasting House, London, and then failed to post it – very typical of my dad." Not long to go until children's programmes disappear altogether from BBC1. What would the six-year-old George have made of that?
