Old and new homes – in pictures

Historic home: east Yorkshire. There’s a £320,000 price tag on this solid-looking house in the village of Bubwith, near Selby. For that you get two neutrally decorated receptions and a sizable kitchen-diner, plus four bedrooms (including a master bedroom with en suite). There are two staircases, which may give it a bit of a rabbit-warren feel, but it adds to its charm. Although the front of the house opens pretty much on to the pavement, at the back you get a double garage and a private garden. Built in the 1890s it is packed with period features: cast iron fireplaces, exposed roof timbers and an original servants bell among them. Even the radiators are ‘period style’, according to the agents, who have put a £480,000 price tag on it. Inside are three receptions, a kitchen-diner, a utility room, a freezer room, and ample sleeping quarters. Outside, a secret garden runs alongside the parking area. This three-bed grade II-listed Georgian townhouse is in Worsley, a village six miles outside Manchester on the banks of the Bridgewater canal. It’s not for those who don’t like steps – you climb to the front door and accommodation is arranged over three floors – but there is plenty of living space. Downstairs boasts a separate lounge, dining room and kitchen/breakfast room, while the first floor has a huge bathroom and a double bedroom. Unfortunately the staircase to the last two bedrooms is from that room. Cost: £295,000. Owen Knox Estates , 0161 884 0430 Photograph: Owen Knox Estates New build: Essex. This brand-new weatherboard home offers three bedrooms and two receptions. Downstairs, the living space is arranged as a large lounge/dining room and kitchen, while on the first floor the developers have managed to squeeze in three bedrooms, including one with en suite, and a bathroom. And it's all yours for £180,00. London is a commutable 35 minutes away from Basildon station. Fans of sea and sand may be attracted to this four-bed detached house just 200 yards from the beach in Selsey, near Chichester. The newly-refurbished property has a stunning kitchen-diner (with floors that look dangerously glossy), a utility area and conservatory, a lounge and study, and one en suite bedroom. The rear garden is expansive and fully enclosed. It’s yours for £399,950. Whiteheads Estate Agents , 01244 888251 Photograph: Whiteheads Estate Agents New build: Kent. Another one beside the sea, this time at Westgate-on-Sea. A hefty £450,000 is needed to buy a two-bed apartment in this striking development overlooking the waves. Work hasn’t begun so you’ll be buying off-plan, but the developers promise high-spec kitchens, a balcony or patio area for each of the nine flats, and a sea view for everyone. There is controlled parking and a cycle store, and the high-speed rail link to London can be accessed at nearby Ramsgate.
