The cover art for Animal Collective’s Centipede HZ album is the digitally reanimated corpse of the Rocky Horror mouth. While the grid of fuzzy neon lines harks back to the graphics for 1982’s virtual-reality sci-fi movie Tron, the collaged imagery has a DIY feel, true to our current age of bedroom animators. Though the immediate reference here is True Blood, its fusion of homely Americana and sinister chills can trace a direct lineage to Grant Wood’s classic portrait of the grim-faced, pitchfork-bearing farmer couple, American Gothic.
