Saturday Sundae: Alexander Büttner shows Michael Owen how to debut

DEBUT OF THE DAY Alexander Büttner. The summer's lowest profile big-club signing made a starring start at Old Trafford. "I was a little bit nervous today. But I won't forget this." RUNNER-UP Michael Owen: starting out at Stoke with a textbook cameo: coming off the bench in the 90th minute and running around looking for a pass. It never came. GOAL OF THE DAY Simon Cox's must-see, Bergkamp-esque strike for Forest against Birmingham. Cox took two touches to control a high ball then dink it over the keeper. Other contenders: Lukas Podolski's free-kick for Arsenal ("He scores when he wants", sang the fans), plus honourable mentions to United's Nick Powell and Villa's Matthew Lowton. TOP TUMBLER Danny Welbeck: an expert air-trip to win United's early missed penalty. "I was irritated," said Wigan's Roberto Martínez. "It's as bad a decision as you'll ever see." MISERABLE FACT OF THE DAY Liverpool's draw at Sunderland means this is their worst start to a season since 1911. Their first win that year came after six games – at Sunderland. BIGGEST LETDOWN The handshake. Big buildup, but no drama. QUOTE OF THE DAY Tony Pulis on Peter Crouch's handball assist for Stoke: "It's lovely for us, a smaller club, getting a decision against a bigger club." PLUS: TRENDS OF THE DAY Two weeks after Britain came out as a nation of triathlon and boccia lovers and pledged to shun football forever, eight of the 10 UK trends on Twitter at 3.41pm were football-related. Jedward prevented a clean sweep.
