Nick Clegg joins chorus of disapproval over Sir Fred Goodwin knighthood

The campaign to strip Sir Fred Goodwin of his knighthood accelerated on Friday night when Nick Clegg said it would be a travesty if it was allowed to remain. The deputy prime minister's intervention means that all three major political party leaders have called for the former RBS head to lose his honour. Clegg said: "I sympathise with those who think it a travesty for a man who did so much damage to the British economy and made so much money in the process to retain his knighthood. "I understand the outrage, and there is an independent process that deals with revoking honours – they must be left to make their own decision on this." David Cameron said this week that the case had been referred to a parliamentary committee that looks at rescinding titles. The prime minister said Goodwin's title would be considered by the forfeiture committee, adding: "It's right it does so, it's right there's a proper process."
