Man drowns saving children off West Wittering beach

A 25-year-old man has drowned after going to the rescue of two children who had got into difficulties playing in a rubber ring. Sussex police, who were called to West Wittering beach at around noon on Saturday, said the unnamed man was not related to the children and described him as "a good Samaritan". The children were safe, but the man was unconscious when taken from the water by an air ambulance crew. The accident happened in view of crowds on the beach on one of the hottest days of the year. One witness described it to the Argus as "a tragic sight" but praised the speedy response of the lifeguards and emergency services.
