1948 Olympics: Day 4: Americans accused of disrespecting King George VI
Such is the level of scrutiny at an Olympic Games, the slightest mishap can start a diplomatic tangle . In 1948, the USA team raised hackles among dignitaries and ordinary spectators for not dipping their flag when parading in front of the King at the opening ceremony. As explained by the Guardian, the actions of the American team were not meant to cause offence.
