The Silver Violin – review

The popular 25-year-old violinist Nicola Benedetti has released this "concept" CD ahead of her appearance at the Last Night of the Proms next weekend and straight after her turn at Scotland's T in the Park. Happy to embrace any repertoire and never mind the musical snobs, she hopes to attract young audiences in the process. The lush, romantic sound of Hollywood – 1930s to the present – suits her well: Korngold's Violin Concerto is the main work, alongside Williams (the theme from Schindler's List ), Hess ( Ladies in Lavender ), Marianelli and Gardel as well as Shostakovich ( The Gadfly ) and Mahler ( Shutter Island ). It helps that in the photo shoot for the disc she looks like a starlet too.
