Catalan Dragons complete famous double over Super League rivals Wigan

The Catalan Dragons completed a famous double over Wigan on Saturday, as the French club's risky decision to switch the game to Montpellier paid off handsomely. Wigan had not lost in eight league and cup fixtures since a 47-28 home defeat by the Dragons in early April, but the Super League champions were sunk in front of a 9,372 crowd at Stade Yves du Manoir despite two tries from their in-form full-back, Sam Tomkins. The Catalans hung on to a 14-12 lead for most of the second half until their Fijian centre Daryl Millard scored his second try, with 10 minutes remaining. They now rival Wigan and Warrington as the form team of the competition with seven wins and a draw from nine Super League fixtures, and they have climbed above Leeds and Castleford to fifth. The game presented the England coach, Steve McNamara, with problems ahead of next Friday's International Origin match against the Exiles at Headingley. Two members of his 22-man squad, the Wigan captain, Sean O'Loughlin, and Joel Tomkins, were involved in a second-half brawl that could lead to disciplinary action. McNamara also seems certain to lose his first-choice hooker, James Roby, after he suffered a suspected fractured eye socket in St Helens' 42-16 thrashing of Leeds on Friday night. Saints' satisfaction at that result, which has lifted them above Wigan to third, was punctured by the first public outing of long-running rumours that their former captain, Paul Sculthorpe, could join Wigan next season, as part of the coaching restructuring necessitated by Michael Maguire's move to South Sydney. Shaun Wane, the former Wigan forward who has been assisting Maguire for 18 months, is expected to be promoted to head coach and the chairman, Ian Lenagan, is thought to have approached Sculthorpe to leave his role as business development manager at Saints. Sculthorpe did not respond to calls on Saturday. Wigan will not comment until they make an official announcement, which is expected within the next fortnight.
