Winsili is the best bet on Friday's Channel 4 Newmarket TV card

William Buick's hopes of landing a first jockeys' championship title may have been extinguished for now, but the jockey can yet play an important part in aiding boss John Gosden towards some silverware of his own. While the destination of the trainers' championship won't be decided until the big money payouts on Champions Day have been determined next month, the £90,000-plus first prize of Friday's Shadwell Fillies Mile won't harm Gosden's prospects in his battle against Aidan O'Brien. Buick has ridden Winsili (2.55) in plenty of her preparatory work, but takes the mount for the first time on the track, with Robert Havlin having been on board when the filly finished second at Ascot last time out. That ride wasn't Havlin's finest hour as he gave Winsili plenty to do in settling her off the pace behind slow early fractions. But at least she will have learnt plenty from the experience and it was encouraging to see her able to make up some ground despite the contest having not gone her way. Certify heads the betting here and rightly so on the strength of her staying performance in the May Hill Stakes last time out. She gets every yard of this one-mile trip. But there isn't a lot between her and Ollie Olga on collateral form with Sky Lantern and neither appear exceptional fillies at this stage, so any further improvement from Winsili should place put her right in the mix. 1.15 Unexposed fillies, many of whom are making notable climbs in grade, and not easy to predict which possesses the most potential. However there was nothing not to like about Waterway Run's dominant display at York on her latest start and she would have won by some distance but for being eased up close home. Michael Murphy, probably the hottest apprentice find of the season, retains his partnership with Annie's Fortune, but is unable to draw his usual weight allowance in this company. 1.45 A late improver, Thistle Bird has gone from strength to strength this season and was a shade unlucky to be mugged by the rallying Premio Loco, who blindsided her at Goodwood two runs ago. She is versatile groundwise and impressed when fighting off the experienced Fulbright at Haydock subsequently. The improving Dank is the other who fits most clearly into the fast-improving category. 2.20 Having never before tackled male company in pattern races, Joviality makes an interesting move into this level. She did best of those ridden handily when third in a valuable contest in Chicago on her latest start, but perhaps didn't quite get home over the mile and a quarter trip, and comes back to the mile over which she took the notable scalp of Chachamaidee at Royal Ascot in June. If Most Improved could be guaranteed to repeat the form of his victory at the same meeting, he would be hard to beat, but his latest laboured effort is hard to excuse.
