The Sun and Independent biggest monthly fallers in daily market

The Sun and the Independent suffered the biggest month-on-month sales declines of the daily national newspaper market in November. Last month the News International tabloid, the UK's biggest selling daily paper, reported a 3.36% month-on-month circulation fall and a 9.45% year-on-year fall, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations figures released on Friday. The Sun has a headline circulation of 2,624,167. In November the Daily Mail, the second biggest daily, which continues to produce some of the most resilient circulation figures in the UK market, sold an average of 2,001,643 copies per day, a month-on-month increase of 0.16%. This represented a 4.72% year-on-year fall. The Independent, which has cut overseas copies and is scaling back bulk sales , reported a month-on-month fall of 4.18%. The Lebedev-owned title's average daily circulation was 127,873, a 28% year-on-year fall. This steep fall reflects the fact that the comparision is with November 2010, when the Independent distributed 87,446 bulks and 23,621 copies overseas. Last month the equivalent figures were 53,302 and 748. Alexander Lebevev's 20p title i grew circulation by nearly 5% month on month, to 221,736 in November and is now within 10,000 copies of the Guardian in terms of its headline average daily figure. However, this growth was achieved by increasing distribution of bulks – copies sold to airlines, rail companies, hotels and gyms for a nominal fee and given free to the public – from 32,324 to 44,914. i's UK and Ireland paid-for circulation declined compared with October, from 179,143 to 176,822. The next biggest year-on-year fallers were the Financial Times, at 15.84%, and the Guardian, at 16.30%. The FT's circulation was 337,239 in November, a 2.27% month-on-month fall. The Guardian, publisher of MediaGuardian, reported a circulation of 226,473 – all paid-for, including 46,653 subscriptions. This represents a 1.76% month-on-month fall. Year-on-year comparison for the Guardian's year-headline circulation was adversely affected by a decision to stop publishing international editions. The Times reported a circulation of 413,233, a 0.95% month-on-month decline and a 11.38% year-on-year fall.
