Driving home for Christmas? Help us plot traffic hotspots in the UK
Storms, sleet and snow are expected to batter parts of the UK this week, causing widespread travel disruption. To help you plan your journeying across the country this Christmas – we've created an open Google map for you to share your journey tips and traffic black spots. The aim of the map is to alert others to places to avoid on the road and rail networks at the busiest times of the year – whether it's a particular junction you know always gets snarled up with traffic at Christmas, a bridge which can become dangerous to cross in rainy weather, or a recommended alternative route – tell others about it by plotting your insights onto our collaborative map here . View Traffic and travel Christmas black spots in a larger map This map will stay open throughout the Christmas and New Year period, when worsening weather impends and more and more people are likely to take to the roads. We don't want to know about momentary traffic jams or fleeting disruption or short-term roadworks – the map is a place for unique and personal insights into which routes to avoid based on your experience and anecdotal evidence. The map also won't contain any live traffic and travel updates – but there are plenty of other good websites you can go to to check this before your journey such as National Rail's travel news Traveline Cymru , Traveline Scotland , AA roadwatch and BBC travel news . To add your travel tip to the map click here , sign in to Google, and click 'edit'. Make sure you don't edit the map name or description as this is there to help others . Click on the blue balloon symbol on the top left-hand corner of the map and drag and drop a coloured balloon to the area you wish to alert people too – then add a little description of the hazard you expect. Stick to red balloons for road, blue balloons for airports and green balloons for trains. You can also suggest alternative routes and tips using the balloons. You can also leave a comment, tweet us @guardian with the tag #uktraffic or email [email protected] with 'UK road map' in the subject heading for us to add your pin to the map. Thanks for all your contributions so far! Feel free to add more suggestions as to how we can make this better in comments on this post.
