Heather Watson sees off Misaki Doi to reach Aegon Classic last-16

Heather Watson underlined the promise that earned her a Wimbledon wild card with a second-round 6-4, 6-2 win over Japan's Misaki Doi at the Aegon Classic in Edgbaston today. The 19-year-old will now face the tournament's fourth seed and world No25, Shuai Peng, for a place in the quarter-finals. The Chinese player ended the hopes of another of Britain's wild-card entries for Wimbledon, Naomi Broady, beating the 21-year-old 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Watson, looking to build on reaching the second round in the French Open at Roland Garros, started sloppily against Doi, dropping her first service game, but she broke back immediately and won the set easily. The second set started in a similar vein but Watson exploited Doi's weak second serve to take the two breaks she needed for victory. Two seeds went out in Birmingham, with the ninth seed, Ayumi Morita, failing to recover from the loss of a first set tie-break on the way to a 7-6, 6-2 defeat against Andrea Hlavackova and the 11th seed, Yaroslava Shvedova, losing to New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, 7-6, 7-5. Elena Baltacha, who has been granted a wild card for next week's Aegon International in Eastbourne, made light work of the Ukrainian Tetiana Luzhanska to reach the quarter-finals at the Aegon Nottingham Challenge. The British No1 beat the qualifier 6-3, 6-4 and will now play either Valeria Savinykh or Lucie Hradecka for the right to play, results permitting, Anne Keothavong in the last four. The remaining Britons, Katie O'Brien and Jade Windley, were both beaten. O'Brien won the first set against the Czech Republic's Renata Voracova 6-2, but then suffered 6-4, 6-1 reverses. The 21-year-old Windley was easily beaten by the Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn. James Ward, Daniel Cox and Daniel Evans have all been granted wild cards for Wimbledon's men's draw and Laura Robson and Emily Webley Smith join Watson, Broady and O'Brien in the women's draw.
