Talking Horses
Sunday's best bets, by Greg Wood A grey morning in Newmarket, but it is dry at the moment and a little less of the sense that it might pour at any moment that was in the air on Saturday. As a result, the fillies contesting the 1,000 Guineas this afternoon are likely to find the going a little less demanding than it was for the colts in the 2,000 Guineas, though only marginally so, with the going officially good-to-soft. The GoingStick, incidentally, is showing the far side as being slightly quicker than the stands' rail, so there is a chance that the field will split as it did for yesterday's Classic, although the winner came from the larger group on the near side. As suggested in today's Observer , my principal thought about the Guineas for betting purposes is that events – principally Camelot's win the 2,000 Guineas, and Frankie Dettori's booking for Lyric Of Light have conspired to make Discourse (3.15) a bigger price than she should be, and there is even some 11-1 available in a place this morning. Maybe, on the other hand, is attracting money steadily, and is now top-price at 6-4 with the possibility of further shrinkage to come as punters seek to climb aboard the Aidan O'Brien bandwagon.
