Carlos Tevez to miss Community Shield after being given extra time off
Carlos Tevez has been given extra time off by Manchester City, who have extended the striker's holiday until Monday. He had been due to return to training on Thursday and the longer break rules him out of Sunday's Community Shield match against Manchester United. Tevez's belated involvement in City's pre-season also casts doubt on his chances of playing in the club's opening Premier League match, against Swansea City a week on Monday. The Argentina international has been allowed extra time to recover from the Copa América. City's manager, Roberto Mancini, had indicated at the weekend that he expected Tevez to return to training on Thursday and a club spokesperson had said on Wednesday afternoon that the striker was indeed due back then. But on Wednesday nightCity clarified that Tevez's holiday continues until Monday. The 27-year-old wants to leave City but will nonetheless be welcomed back, according to the midfielder David Silva. Tevez came close to joining Corinthians, one of his former clubs, this summer before a proposed £45m deal collapsed due to a lack of finance available to the Brazilian club. Yet the striker signalled this week that he is minded to return to Carrington and train professionally ahead of the new season. Silva said Tevez can expect a warm welcome from his team-mates. The playmaker said: "Carlos has to return and that's great. He's a very important player for us. I don't think there will be a problem. We know Carlos well. If he stays, great. There are a lot of competitions and we hope to play well in them all. "He'd help that. I haven't spoken with him. When he's on holiday you have to leave him be and let him relax. That way he comes back and actually can't wait to come back." How relations are between Tevez and Mancini will become clearer over the coming days. Patience within the club hierarchy with Tevez is short, particularly since he followed last autumn's transfer request by again declaring he wanted to leave the club this summer and saying he would not return to Manchester. Mancini appeared to welcome the competition the Argentinian's return would create, however, as Tevez will vie with Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Agüero, Tevez's countryman and the record £38m signing. The manager said: "We will have four strikers fighting for the shirts. That's good for us. When you are playing in four competitions, we need that competition, we need those players. Players fighting for the shirt is a good thing." Silva, a member of last season's FA Cup-winning side, said: "This is my second season [at the club] and I hope it turns out well, like my first. I hope I win another trophy. At the end of last season we had some good performances." The 25-year-old Spaniard added that he is also excited by the arrival of Agüero, who had been purchased to replace Tevez. "Sergio Agüero is a brilliant player," he said. "I think he'll turn out very well and he can really help us. We have to adapt with him and he has to adapt with us."
