Welsh Government signs 'intelligent transport systems' deal

The Welsh Government has awarded a four year contract for the management of 'intelligent transport systems', including telecommunications and tunnel systems for the entire motorway and trunk road network in Wales. From July the winning contractors, Amey and URS/Scott Wilson, will provide motorway technology including telephones, signals, CCTV cameras and the two traffic management centres across Wales. A spokesman for the Welsh Government told GGC that the contract will be worth approximately £2m a year. Transport minister, Carl Sargeant, said: "The use and effective management of motorway technology such as CCTV cameras, signals and telecommunications are becoming an ever increasingly important tool for further improving safety and reducing congestion on our trunk roads. "This contract will enable the existing network of technology on the Welsh Government's trunk roads and motorways - including both traffic management centres - to be continued and further developed for the benefit of the traveling public."
