Teacher Network newsletter: Holocaust Memorial Day and blogs worth talking about

Dear colleague No matter how miserable it can be on my morning commute if high winds bring a tree down across the train power lines, or how dark and bitter it is as I back out of the drive with my headlights piercing the gloom of the winter mornings, I never forget how lucky I am to be living the life I am living. Why am I telling you this? Take a few moments to look at some of the resources that have been put up on the Guardian Teacher Network in readiness for Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday and you'll understand. There will be an article in Education Guardian about some of them on Tuesday and last week we published a blog by history teacher Leanne Judson about her use of resources from the Institute of Education. New teaching resources on the network This week we have some fabulous resources including African pancake recipes - worth bookmarking for Shrove Tuesday from charity Send a Cow . There are also some brilliant fact sheets and lesson plans on renewable energy for 7-11 year olds from Solar Aid. If you are looking for ways to invigorate your planning then take a look at Mike Gershon's new resource: The Curriculum Compendium . This resource offers lots of ideas for the main 15 subjects taught at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Primary Make a komodo dragon mask for Chinese New Year Spellathon resources Local traffic Story map Little Red Riding Hood Secondary Movement breaks Thomas Hardy - The Man He Killed The Human Eye Faulks on Fiction Blog of the week This week has been a record-breaking week for comments on our blog and we have been delighted to see so many readers taking the time to join in the discussions. Peter Kemp's blog, which is part of the Digital Literacy Campaign, certainly hit a nerve when he talked about how as an ICT teacher his students couldn't easily (and legally) get access to resources they needed at home. Take a look here: Pupils need free home access to ICT tools . Peter wrote an open source textbook to try and make it easier for A-Level computing students to study from home and it is available here . Do you have a brilliant resource you would like to tell us about? Then why not write a blog about it and send it to [email protected] and Emma will get in touch. Please put blog as the subject of your email. Looking to change jobs or got a vacancy to fill? As I sit writing this there are more than 1,400 jobs available on our dedicated jobs website Guardian Schools Jobs . The jobs are not only in teaching but support roles and leadership vacancies - from Milton Keynes to Munich - so wherever you fancy moving to, take a look here first. And if your school has a vacancy to fill make the most of our introductory advertiser offer whereby we'll run your first ad for free, just call 020 3353 2010 to give the details to our schools jobs team. We are getting some really terrific response rates because we have 8.7 million regular education users of theguardian.com . Seminars coming up If you want to know more about how to boost your school's profile in the media then the Guardian Teacher Network seminar called Working with the Press is for you. Receive guidance and advice from Guardian journalists and PR experts. The seminar is on Tuesday, February 7 and there is a 20 per cent discount for GTN members. And finally… I wanted to end with some inspirational pictures of achievement... and sacrifice. This week marked the centenary of Captain Scott and his British team reaching the South Pole… second - just after the Norwegian Amundsen. Our colleagues at The Guardian ran this amazing gallery of pics . Perfect for sharing in class or just for quiet reflection. Wishing you a Happy Chinese New Year for Monday, a great Burns Night on Wednesday and a fantastic week.
