1948 Olympics: Day 7: A thrilling women's hurdles
Fanny Blankers-Koen was the undisputed star of the 1948 London Olympics , winning four gold medals and smashing world and Olympic records. In a thrilling 80m hurdles final, she beat Great Britain's Maureen Gardner into the silver medal position in a tantalisingly close race. Rob Bagchi wrote earlier this year that Blankers-Koen had demolished prejudices about gender, age and motherhood - prejudices that are apparent even in the Manchester Guardian's reporting of her victory on 5 August 1948.
