Six Nations 2012: Stuart Lancaster makes his case with England victory
Stuart Lancaster, England's interim coach, made an early pitch for the job on a permanent basis after masterminding a first victory at Murrayfield since 2004, describing the 13–6 victory over wasteful Scotland as the first step. England scored the only try of the game, and the first in the fixture in the Scottish capital for eight years, when the recalled fly-half Charlie Hodgson charged down a kick near Scotland's line by his opposite number Dan Parks 25 seconds after the restart. "We talked in the buildup about establishing a new culture and the attitude we showed in defence showed that," said Lancaster, whose side are away again in the next round of matches, facing Italy in Rome next Saturday. "A lot was made about the international inexperience of the side but I had every confidence in them. "This was the first step on the journey we are taking. We did not get everything right and we struggled to keep possession to get continuity in attack, but that was all about the players doing it for the shirt and each other. We won in a very difficult place and it was a great effort by everyone." Seven players won their first caps during the evening, while the captain, Chris Robshaw, was making his second international appearance. "I am very proud," he said. "Everyone stuck up his hand and showed how proud he was to represent the nation." The Scotland coach, Andy Robinson, lamented his side's age-old weakness of failing to convert possession into tries. They have not scored one at Murrayfield against England, Ireland or France since 2006 and they have been tryless in their four matches since the 34-24 World Cup group win over Romania in September. "It is deja vu and bitterly disappointing," he said. "We made 14 line breaks and failed to score a try. Rugby at this level is all about inches and small margins and we have to keep working. "I was disappointed about the breakdown. I felt there was a difference in interpretation there that worked to England's advantage, but we lost because we were not accurate enough. We have to be better and we will only do that by staying together."
