New music: Pheo – California Sex

Reading this on mobile? Click here for playlist In 1995 when Tupac rapped about California, there was nothing but love. On 25-year-old rapper Pheo's 2012 tribute things get a little more carnal. California Sex is an ode specifically to the female population of America's most populated state, Pheo delivering charming lines such as "we shag on the ground" in his slurred drawl over expansive synth rumbles, Drake-esque dripfeed beats and those gargantuan drum claps that seem to have taken over hip-hop of late. California Sex also sets the tone for the rest of the EP of the same name, all of which is available to download for free from the player above. Featuring a sample from Beastie Boys ' Intergalactic, Drop finds Pheo more engaged over a futuristic patter of chirruping beats and ghostly synths, while the ecstatic Angelina's Beamer is the sort of song you imagine people play in their drop-top Escalades. How Eye and This All Been Vintage, meanwhile, show off the production skills of Diplo associate DJ, who builds up layers of echo-laden piano and squelching beats on the former and utilises a gorgeous organ riff on the latter. Apparently Pheo's mantra is Avocado Everything, meaning black on the outside (skin) and green on the inside (money). We're not sure how giving away your EPs for free is going to help the whole money situation but if California Sex tells us anything it's that Pheo's not short on confidence.
