For the record
Our Shakespeare special ( Magazine, 1 July ) misquoted Simon Russell Beale when we said his greatest regret was "not playing Richard III". He played Richard III in 1992; it's Richard II he regrets never playing. And in the same piece we quoted the First Quarto version of Hamlet's soliloquy as: "To be, or not to be, I there's the point." We meant: "Aye, there's the point". Contrary to " Former Israeli PM Yitzhak Shamir dies " (News, 1 July), the Holocaust claimed the lives of his mother and sisters after he moved to Palestine in 1935. " Will This Be a Good Year For the Roses? " (New Review), referred to a cover version of the Who's Teenage Wasteland. That should have been Baba O'Riley. Mea culpa: my review of a CD of Schubert operatic overtures (New Review, 24 June) said we are left to imagine what Alfonso und Estrella , Fierrabras and Der Teufel als Hydraulicus might sound like complete. Happily, that isn't the case. Recordings of both Alfonso und Estrella and Fierrabras exist and Der Teufel als Hydraulicus is a play by Johann Albrecht for which Schubert simply wrote an overture. Apologies. Write to Stephen Pritchard, Readers' Editor, the Observer , Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU, tel 020 3353 4656 or email [email protected]
