52. Geordie Greig

Job: editor, Mail on Sunday Age: 52 Industry: publishing 2011 ranking: 72 This was the year when Geordie Greig became the first Old Etonian to edit a mid-market paper. And the question is: does it show? For some of his critics the former London Evening Standard editor doesn't understand the Mail on Sunday's true character in quite the same way as his predecessor Peter Wright. Still, his record is impressive. He ran a happy ship at the Standard where two social welfare campaigns struck a popular chord. But the real test for the well-connected former Tatler editor will be whether he can halt the slide in the MoS's circulation. It fell below 1.8m in July, down more than a fifth year on year as the gains that followed the closure of the News of the World were wiped out. "The idea that he is a shoo-in as Paul Dacre's successor [at the Daily Mail] is fanciful but he is among the contenders," said one of our experts. "He needs time to prove himself."
