Cardiff care sector makes video appeal

Vulnerable adults and care agencies have made an appeal to Cardiff council via Youtube to reconsider their decision on changes to Cardiff's home care services . The council's executive approved proposals to overhaul the adult home care service provision in Cardiff by shaving the number of providers from 56 to 11. But users and providers were appalled by the plans , and lack of consultation prior to the executive meeting – and an independent councillor has today called in the decision. In the video Mary Cottrell, spokesperson for Cardiff Domiciliary Care Providers Association says the proposals have caused anxiety and concern among users and agencies. She says: "In our opinion the proposals are unworkable, unrealistic and cruel." The association believe they have an alternative proposal which would save the council the same £1.5m the proposals say. Cottrell said service users, faced with the prospect of letting stranger into their homes to provide care, were upset and distressed. The video also shows care workers who say if they were forced to move companies they would consider leaving the care industry altogether. Read our previous report on the call in the decision. The community and adult services scrutiny committee, where providers hope the video will be presented, will take place this Friday at 11am in County Hall.
