Mark Webber takes pole for British Grand Prix at Silverstone
The winner of last year's race, Mark Webber, has claimed pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix, only his second of the season. His Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel completed the front row, with Ferrari claiming third and fourth, but there was disappointment for McLaren at their home race with Jenson Button in fifth place and Lewis Hamilton managing only 10th. Rain affected the qualifying as it has dominated practice here at Silverstone. It began within minutes of the first session, which was run entirely on wet tyres. However the track began to dry during qualifying two and the final minutes saw a shoot-out as the teams switched to fully dry tyres. Mercedes's Michael Schumacher was the hardest hit when, despite his skill in the wet, he could not make the most of the changing conditions and finished in 13th, a disappointment for the seven-times world champion who will surely be hopeful a rain-affected race will allow him to take advantage. Britain's Paul di Resta, however, nailed a storming lap at the end of the session to secure a place in the final shoot-out, again out-qualifying his Force India team-mate, Adrian Sutil, in a fine performance from the rookie at his debut home grand prix. Webber then put in a quick lap early in qualifying three that was to prove decisive. With the early runs complete the teams returned to the pits for a newest of the soft tyres. But as they exited for final flying laps three minutes from time the rain returned. Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg made initial efforts to go faster but had to abandon them as the grip disappeared. It left Lewis Hamilton in 10th with no chance to improve and facing a major task to move through the grid during the race. The session ended with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa in third and fourth and Di Resta holding on to a remarkable sixth. The changeable conditions also saw a fine result for Williams's Pastor Maldonado in seventh and Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi, who secured eighth. The news preceding the session was dominated by discussion of how the off-throttle diffuser rule changes would affect performance but, while that rumbles on and despite protestations from all sides, the status quo at the front of the grid remains, with Red Bull firmly on top. Webber celebrated his race victory last year by proclaiming "not bad for a No2 driver", but has yet to lead a lap this season. He will be expecting to break that duck on Sunday and more importantly that he will still be in front come the chequered flag. "I'm in good shape, prepared well and hope to challenge for the win," he said afterwards.
