New music: Cornelia – Stormy Weather
Reading this on mobile? Click here to listen Imagine you're a Swedish singer with a penchant for slightly leftfield pop and you want to set up your own independent record label after a slightly troubling brush with the mainstream. Who do you call? Yes, that's right: Robyn . Well, if you're Cornelia, you email her. After pulling out of the first season of Swedish Idol when she realised it wasn't the direction she wanted to go in, Cornelia sought advice from Swedish pop's best export on how to set up and run a label. With the advice ringing in her ears she launched her Camp Mozart imprint and set about not only releasing her own songs but collaborating with everyone from modern jazz experimentalists Portico Quartet to Hyperdub signing Scratcha DVA. You could argue that influences from both appear on new single Stormy Weather, as creaking electronica and strange sound effects gurgle beneath off-kilter drums and Cornelia's gorgeous Martina Topley-Birdesque vocals. Whatever Robyn said in her email, it seems to be working. Stormy Weather is released on 28 August on Exceptional Blue/Camp Mozart. Cornelia plays The Old Queen's Head in London on 6 August.
