This week's new films
ill Manors (18) (Ben Drew, 2012, UK) Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Anouska Mond. 121 mins The coalition government has repeatedly denied his existence, but Plan B proves he's for real with this intense, provocative survey of British urban decay in all its forms. A few too many forms, perhaps, as this crams in so many tales of hardship, exploitation, drugs and violence, and seeks to render them in so many ways (hip-hop numbers, tricksy visuals, flashbacks), it gets a bit carried away. Still, top marks for at least trying to tell it like it is. Red Tails (12A) (Anthony Hemingway, 2012, US) Cuba Gooding Jr, Terrence Howard. 125 mins George Lucas co-produces this story of the African-American Tuskegee Airmen and their role in the second world war, fighting both Nazis and racism. There's more of an eye for aerial action than grown-up drama, though. A Fantastic Fear Of Everything (15) (Crispian Mills, Chris Hopewell, 2012, UK) Simon Pegg, Paul Freeman. 100 mins Pegg plays a crime writer struggling to overcome his crippling paranoia in this surreal comedy-horror, or is it just paranoia? Casa De Mi Padre (15) (Matt Piedmont, 2012, US) Will Ferrell, Gael García Bernal. 84 mins Ferrell jamons it up in this offhand Spanish-language Mexican western/telenovela spoof. Woody Allen: A Documentary (15) (Robert B Weide, 2012, US) 113 mins Allen alumni (except Mia Farrow) queue up to testify to just how what an extraordinary talent he is, in a respectful doc that would rather get access to the man himself than ask the difficult questions. The Innkeepers (15) (Ti West, 2011, US) Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis. 101 mins Another expertly measured horror from the House Of The Devil director, set in a supposedly haunted hotel whose days are numbered – as are those of the guests. The Pact (15) (Nicholas McCarthy, 2012, US) Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Agnes Bruckner. 89 mins Resourceful if routine low-budget horror in which a woman returns to her family home, where unseen forces make her act like she's in a horror movie. Sing Your Song (12A) (Susanne Rostock, 2011, US) 105 mins Harry Belafonte's journey from singer to civil rights figure makes for a worthwhile, if hagiographic documentary. Arirang (NC) (Kim Ki-duk, 2011, S Kor) 100 mins Korean provocateur Kim examines his own troubled state of mind in this stark self-made confessional. The Harsh Light Of Day (NC) (Oliver S Milburn, 2012, UK) Dan Richardson, Giles Alderson, Sophie Linfield. 90 mins The victim of a brutal attack seeks unearthly revenge in this far-fetched horror thriller. Mission To Lars (NC) (James Moore, William Spicer, 2012, UK/US) 74 mins Siblings attempt to fulfil their autistic brother's dream of meeting Metallica's Lars Ulrich. Passport To Pimlico (U) (Henry Cornelius, 1949, UK) Stanley Holloway, Margaret Rutherford. 84 mins Vintage Ealing comedy.
