After a number of Olympics events were seen to have empty seats in the spectator stands at the Games over the weekend, soldiers were drafted in to fill prime seating at the aquatics centre, gymnastics arena and basketball venue. This came after pictures of athletes competing against banks of empty seats were beamed around the world on the first day of competition. Read the latest story on the issue here. But who should fill the empty seats? Guardian readers have been tweets @gdnLondon2012 with their suggestions. In the spirit of the opening ceremony many tweets mentioned giving the seats to children and schools: @ GdnLondon2012 School children, students, OAPs, why can't they give them out to anyone who wants them? — Mudfishpokemon (@ciamarsh) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 Kids at summer clubs- tennis, swimming, football. Youth groups with no resources. GO! — Lisa Gardner (@lightestlily) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 I think schools should be given the empty seats; surely it's all about inspiring future generations. What are your thoughts? — SACO Apartments (@SACOApartments) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 @ guardian why can't these tickets be sold, or at least offer them to school kids they are the future sportspeople. — bronwyn walenkamp (@bwalen) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 Seats for OAPs, people with disabilities, dole recipients used as slaves for Big Betty's Jubilee, childrn with their teachers — wattlesong (@wattlesong) July 30, 2012 And giving the seats to the local community: @ GdnLondon2012 they should be given to local kids & public sector workers — Janice Rush (@Jan_Rush) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 @ guardian - hackney folk, teachers & pupils. — Piers Golden (@goldenphoto_pro) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 give them away to local people who couldn't get or afford to buy tickets. — Mark Dibella (@dibella_mark) July 30, 2012 To hardworkers who might deserve a break: @ GdnLondon2012 young carers who need a bit of respite, should have some of the empty seats. — Tracy Kelly (@TJKelly18) July 30, 2012 Those who missed out first time round: @ GdnLondon2012 they know the people are who registered for tickets and didn't get any as they email us every day. — Philippa_Perry (@Philippa_Perry) July 30, 2012 And lastly to the popular suggestion that seats should be allocated on a first comes first served basis to whoever can endure the queue. @ GdnLondon2012 Turn up, queue, get unused tickets? How difficult does it need to be? — Chrissey Sullivan (@cocomyrtle) July 30, 2012 @ GdnLondon2012 first come first served - we're British, we like queuing! — Celia Brayfield (@performingceel) July 30, 2012 @ gdnlondon2012 the public should be able to queue for unused corporate seats, like at Wimbledon & White City — Gabrielle Jackson (@gabriellecj) July 30, 2012 What do you think?
